Derivatives regulation could sweep up steel

The U.S. government has outlined plans to regulate the over-the-counter (OTC) derivatives market in a move intended to shine light on complex instruments like credit-default swaps but which might lead to an overhaul of the nascent iron ore and steel trading markets as well.

Ranking the world's top steelmakers

For the third year running, ArcelorMittal SA claimed the title of the world's largest steelmaker.  The Luxembourg-based company's raw steel output of 103.3 million tonnes - although down more than 11 percent from 2007- was nearly triple that of its nearest rival, Japan's Nippon Steel Corp.

South Korean 'not specified' line pipe imports more than double.

South Korea import 47629 tons of "not specified" line pipe to the United States in January 2009, according to McKees Rocks, PA - based SteelFacts and final import data from the U.S. Census Bureau.  That figure is more than double the 20,872 tons South Korea brought into the United States in December 2008 and nearly four times as much as the country brought in as recently as June 2008.
